I was on a girls trip back in November and we were looking for a black owned business (BOB) to support during the trip. We locked in on Flavor Hill especially based on how close it was to our resort. We booked a reservation for Sunday Brunch and everything was good to go so we thought.
As we were walking in a couple was singing praises about how much they enjoyed the food and the service, so I was so excited. I was not really hungry but I knew going into the facility I was going to write this review so I decided in advance I would order sides if nothing else to help you all out if you decided to frequent this place when if you were in the area.
There were numerous obstacles to overcome, and it all started with how the restaurant was being managed from the front of the house to the kitchen…it was a HOTMESS! As I mentioned earlier, we had a reservation, and we arrived on time. Although we were on time and the place was not full, we had to wait, and I overheard people coming in after us who did not have a reservation but were being seated before us. After witnessing this three times I walked up to the desk and requested to speak with a manager who quickly got us seated.
The server assigned to our table was nice, but the malfunctioning handheld system was the first indicator we were going to have problems with our meal. The new system exposed flaws in the operation of the seating / ordering within the restaurant. There were several sections with the same number (i.e. 1-19 on the floor and at the bar) so food that a table did not order kept coming to tables when it was supposed to go to the bar and vice versa. It got to the point that it was taking so long for the food to come that I watched the table next to us accept food that was not theirs because they were tired of waiting for their food. I think I could halfway understand if every table was full and they were just so busy, but that was not the case at all. It was just utter chaos with how the seating was working along with the ordering system.
By the time the food came for our table…some of the sides were cold, one of the people at our table did not get her food at all (the group next to us came after us, but they started getting food before us that they did not order, so they were eating food from other tables and the person who did not get her food they ended up having to make the person at our table a new one) we finally had all of our food after being there for almost two hours.
It was so bad I asked to speak to the manager, I was informed the owner was in and then I requested to speak to the owner, but he never came out. I wanted to provide the feedback to him as a courtesy just based on what I observed was going on in the two hours we were in there. Prayerfully he will read this review and make some adjustments.
Now getting to the food the sweet potato cornbread here with or without the rest of your food is the one thing the three of us who ate here can agree on…it was sooooo good! I ordered the Cajun smoked turkey collard greens, 5 cheese Macaroni, and the Empirical Yams, from the Brunch Menu. One of my friends ordered the Good Morning Breakfast and the other one ordered the Biscuits and Gravy. I am not sure what the remaining item was…I think it is soup with rolls. The biscuits were hard and the person who ordered them did not eat it.
The other people at my table did like their hot food but hands down the best thing to hit the table was the sweet potato cornbread! I had such high hopes for this place headed in…we heard about the fish and grits, but we did not want to order a meal that size based on a previous meal we consumed earlier. The manager who ended up seating us ended up coming back to our table and comping most of our meal (and several others that day based on all the things going on that day). Prayerfully, your experience with this restaurant will not be the same as ours.
